Short Course
Kursus singkat dengan durasi 3 - 4 jam. Meskipun kursus singkat tetapi dengan bimbingan instruktur professional peserta sudah bisa membuat perhiasan sendiri seperti cincin, anting ataupun liontin. Semua tahap dikerjakan sendiri oleh peserta mulai dari disain, penempaan, pengukiran, pematrian, pemolesan dan lain sebagainya. Instruktur hanya mengarahkan dan membetulkan pengerjaan yang kurang bagus. Pada akhir kursus peserta akan sangat bangga dan tidak percaya dapat membuat perhiasan sendiri dengan hasil yang bagus.

Paket ini sudah termasuk peralatan dasar untuk pembuatan perhiasan perak dan diharapkan setelah mengikuti kursus ini peserta dapat berkreasi sendiri dengan peralatan yang sudah ada.

Kursus Batik, Menyelami Budaya Batik Tulis hingga Lukis

Mengunjungi Yogyakarta, anda tak hanya bisa membeli dan menikmati karya seni batik yang mengagumkan, tetapi juga berkesempatan untuk mempelajari teknik pembuatannya. Kesempatan yang sangat berharga itu dikemas dalam paket wisata menarik dengan durasi yang cukup singkat dan harga yang terjangkau, pasti akan sangat menyenangkan.

Ragam batik yang bisa dipelajari meliputi batik tulis, batik cap dan batik lukis. Setiap tempat yang menawarkan biasanya memiliki spesifikasi tersendiri tentang jenis batik yang diajarkan. Selama sehari, biasanya dibagi dalam dua sesi, anda akan belajar seluruh proses pembuatan batik yang umumnya terdiri dari pembuatan motif, pewarnaan kain, proses ngorot malam dan penjemuran.

Proses pembuatan motif dimulai ketika seluruh bahan, terutama kain mori, telah siap. Pembuatan motif ini dilakukan dengan bahan utama lilin atau malam yang digunakan sebagai zat perintang warna. Bila ingin membuat batik tulis, maka pembuatan motif digunakan dengan alat bantu canting sementara batik cap menggunakan cap batik yang telah didesain sesuai motif yang diinginkan.

Biasanya, anda bebas memilih motif yang hendak dibuat. Motif-motif unik yang bisa dibuat misalnya motif ceplok, motif cecek sawut dan motif semen. Semua motif itu terdapat pada bangunan-bangunan bersejarah di Indonesia. Motif ceplok terdapat pada Candi Borobudur, motif cecek sawut terdapat pada hiasan genderang perunggu pada Zaman Perunggu sementara motif semen terdapat pada makan Ratu Kalinyamat.

Proses dilanjutkan dengan mewarnai kain. Caranya, kain yang telah dimotif dicelupkan dalam ember yang berisi zat warna. Sepertinya proses ini sederhana, namun sebenarnya cukup sulit, apalagi bila menginginkan batik lebih dari dua warna. Banyak pembatik masih menggunakan pewarna alami yang terbuat dari bahan alam tertentu, namun banyak pula yang menggunakan pewarna sintetik.

Usai mewarnai kain hingga merata, proses pembuatan batik dilanjutkan dengan nglorot malam, atau melarutkan lilin yang melekat di kain. Mulanya, disiapkan dulu air mendidih yang dicampur dengan abu soda dan akhirnya kain dicelupkan hingga seluruh lilin larut dalam air. Bila lilin belum juga larut, maka harus dibersihkan dahulu pasca pelorotan.

Tahap akhirnya adalah pencucian. Bila menggunakan pewarna alami, maka pencuciannya tidak bisa menggunakan deterjen sebab akan merusak warna. Setelah dicuci, kain dijemur dengan cara diangin-anginkan agar warna tak pudar. Setelah dijemur inilah anda bisa melihat perbedaan batik yang diwarnai dengan pewarna alami, biasanya warnanya akan lebih kusam.

Tempat-tempat kursus batik di Yogyakarta menyediakan instruktur-instruktur profesional sehingga bisa membuat anda mahir meski kursus dalam jangka waktu singkat. Beberapa tempat juga memiliki instruktur yang menguasai bahasa asing, umumnya Bahasa Inggris, sehingga memudahkan anda memahami materi yang diberikan.

Beberapa tempat yang menyediakan jasa kursus batik antara lain Sanggar Kalpika yang berada di Kampung Taman, sebelah barat Tamansari. Di sana, anda akan ditawari belajar batik lukis. Bagi anda yang ingin mempelajari batik tulis dan cap (cetak), Balai Batik adalah tempat yang tepat. Lembaga yang berlokasi di Jalan Kusumanegara ini menyiapak tenaga dan ruangan khusus bagia anda yang ingin belajar membatik. Biaya yang dikeluarkan bervariasi sesuai durasi kursus yang diinginkan, berkisar antara Rp 250.000,00 hingga Rp 1.500.000,00.

Selain belajar membatik, anda juga bisa mengamati aktivitas dan hasil karya pembatik Kampung Taman yang sejak 30 tahun lampau mengembangkan batik lukis. Anda juga bisa melihat beragam karya batik nusantara yang dipamerkan di Balai Batik.

PECEL BAYWATCH

PECEL BAYWATCH - Menyantap Pecel Kembang Turi Racikan Mbah Warno "Anderson"
Semula saya sempat bingung dengan julukan Pecel Baywatch yang disandang oleh pecel Mbah Warno. Terlintaslah imajinasi nakal tentang sosok penjual pecel yang mengenakan bikini seperti Mbak Pamela Anderson atau setidaknya warung ini berada di pinggir pantai. Ternyata salah semua. Beginilah cerita lengkapnya.

Warung Mbah Warno terletak di daerah Kasongan, tepatnya berada di jalan menuju Gunung Sempu. Warung yang sudah berdiri sejak 35 tahun lalu ini sangat sederhana. Papan nama warung pecel Mbah Warno ini hanya berukuran 30 x 20 cm2 yang pasti terlewat jika tak benar-benar memerhatikannya. Interior warung diisi oleh perabot yang fungsional dan apa adanya. Hanya terdapat beberapa meja dan kursi kayu serta satu dipan bambu. Di belakang meja tempat meletakkan dagangannya, terdapat dapur berisikan beberapa anglo yang selalu mengepulkan asap. Sebuah posisi yang tak disengaja sebenarnya, sebab dapur dalam konsep Jawa biasanya terletak di bagian belakang. Mbah Warno meletakkan dapur di bagian depan warung pasca gempa Mei 2006 yang meruntuhkan bangunan rumahnya. "Belum punya uang untuk membangun dapur baru", ujarnya.

Mbah Warno menjajakan menu utama pecel dengan beragam lauk sebagai pengiringnya. Mulai dari lele dan belut goreng kering, tahu bacem, mangut belut (belut bersantan yang dibumbui cabai), hingga bakmi goreng. YogYES memesan semuanya agar dapat merasakan aneka rasa masakan Mbah Warno ini.

Sambil menunggu, pikiran saya melayang menelusuri asal-usul pecel yang sama tidak jelasnya dengan soto. Banyak daerah di Jawa memiliki pecel dengan ciri khasnya masing-masing, misalnya Pecel Madiun, Pecel Blitar, Pecel Madura, Pecel Slawi dan lain-lain. Namun setidaknya, seorang sejarawan Belanda bernama H.J Graaf pernah mengungkapkan bahwa ketika Ki Ageng Pemanahan melaksanakan titah Sultan Hadiwijaya untuk hijrah ke hutan yang disebut Alas Mentaok (sekarang Kotagede), rombongan beliau disambut masyarakat di pinggir Sungai Opak dan dijamu dengan berbagai jenis masakan, termasuk pecel.

Lamunan saya terputus saat pecel dan beberapa makanan pengiring tiba di meja. Seporsi pecel, lele goreng, dan tahu bacem seolah menantang untuk secepatnya dinikmati. Terdapat empat jenis sayuran dalam hidangan berlumur bumbu kacang ini yakni daun bayam, daun pepaya, kembang turi (Sesbania grandiflora), dan kecambah / taoge. Kita akan disergap rasa manis dari bumbu kacang yang menggelitik lidah. Saat menguyah kembang turi yang agak getir, rasa manis tadi berpadu sehingga menghasilkan kelezatan yang sulit diungkapkan.

Pecel dengan kembang turi merupakan ciri khas pecel "ndeso". Jaman sekarang sudah sulit untuk menemukan penjual pecel seperti ini. Konon kembang turi memiliki khasiat meringankan panas dalam dan sakit kepala ringan. Jadi tidak heran bila orang Jawa, India, dan Suriname (masih keturunan Jawa juga sih, hehehe) sering menyantap kembang turi muda sebagai sayuran.

Pecel akan bertambah nikmat jika ditambah dengan lele goreng atau tahu bacem. Lele goreng di tempat ini dimasak hingga kering sehingga crispy ketika digigit. Sedangkan tahu bacem yang berukuran cukup besar dapat dinikmati sebagai cemilan bersama cabai rawit. Selain itu juga terdapat hidangan lain seperti belut goreng dengan dua variasinya. Pertama, belut goreng kering yang berukuran kecil dan belut goreng basah yang lebih besar. Ada juga bakmi goreng dan mangut belut bagi anda yang menggemari makanan pedas. Asap dari anglo menambah sensasi rasa dari hidangan di warung ini.

Entah karena kenyang atau efek kembang turi, selesai makan kepala saya terasa lebih cerdas dari biasanya. Sambil ngobrol ringan dengan Mbah Warno dan asistennya, saya jadi paham kenapa pecel di tempat ini dijuluki Pecel Baywatch. Hal itu karena Mbah Warno dan asistennya selalu mengenakan sejenis baju yang disebut kaus kutang. Pakaian yang sangat nyaman untuk dikenakan di tengah udara pedesaan Kasongan Bantul yang kering dan panas.

Walau penjual pecel ada dimana-mana, Pecel Baywatch tetap menawarkan sesuatu yang lain bagi anda. Sebuah kombinasi kelezatan makanan, suasana pedesaan yang kental, dan keramahan Mbah Warno "Anderson". (nang)

NASI GORENG BERINGHARJO - Kelezatan Kuliner Jawa Cina

Nasi Goreng Beringharjo, kini bisa dijumpai di Jalan Mataram, tepat di pertigaan ketiga sebelah kiri jalan yang menuju ke pasar bersejarah di Yogyakarta itu. Sebelum penghujung tahun 2004, tepatnya sebelum ada pembersihan pedagang kaki lima di wilayah tersebut, nasi goreng itu bisa ditemui di pertigaan menuju kawasan Shopping yang kini dirombak menjadi Taman Pintar, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta dan Pusat Penjualan Buku.

Nasi goreng ini adalah salah satu yang pantas dicicipi sebab kelezatannya telah diakui banyak orang dan dikenal sejak tahun 1960-an, saat sang penjual memulai bisnisnya. Tak perlu menunggu lama jika hendak mencicipinya, sebab penjual biasanya memasak nasi goreng langsung dalam jumlah besar sehingga bisa dihidangkan dalam waktu cepat. Anda bisa datang mulai pukul 18.00 WIB hingga sekitar pukul 23.00 WIB bila ingin mencicipinya, serta bisa memilih ingin duduk lesehan atau di kursi yang tersedia.

Menyantap nasi goreng ini, anda akan merasa seperti mendengarkan sepiring cerita tentang akulturasi Jawa Cina. Jenis masakan nasi goreng sendiri misalnya, sebenarnya berasal dari daratan Cina yang kemudian 'bermigrasi' ke Indonesia. Mulanya, nasi goreng muncul dari tradisi bangsa Cina yang tak ingin membuang nasi sisa, sehingga nasi tersebut diolah dengan bumbu-bumbu yang tersedia, seperti bawang merah, bawang putih dan kecap. Ketika bangsa Cina mulai berdatangan ke Indonesia, masakan itu pun mulai dikenal oleh warga negara Indonesia dan berangsur menjadi satu dengan masakan Indonesia sendiri.

Bukti akulturasinya adalah adanya berbagai variasi nasi goreng, mulai nasi goreng ayam, nasi goreng sea food, nasi goreng kambing, bahkan nasi goreng pete yang notabene bumbu khas Indonesia. Rasanya pun bermacam-macam, ada yang lebih menonjolkan citarasa bawang putih, ada pula yang menonjolkan citarasa bahan tambahannya, misalnya ayam. Nasi goreng Beringharjo memilih memasak nasi goreng ayam dan "B2".

Bicara tentang kecap sebagai salah satu bumbunya, itu pun menyimpan cerita tentang penyesuaian bangsa Cina ketika tinggal di Jawa. Kecap, sebenarnya bernama kie tjap, dibuat dari sari ikan yang difermentasikan. Ketika bangsa Cina tinggal di Jawa dan menemukan bahwa kedelai lebih murah dibandingkan ikan, bahan baku pembuatan kie tjap pun diubah menjadi dari kedelai. Akibatnya, kie tjap pun tidak lagi memiliki citarasa ikan, tetapi hanya berasa manis untuk kecap manis, begitu pula nasi goreng. Citarasa bawang putih yang sangat kuat pun juga menjadi ciri masakan-masakan yang berasal dari Cina.

Meski akibat akulturasi itu terdapat banyak sekali nasi goreng di hampir setiap sudut gang, Nasi Goreng Beringharjo tetap memiliki kekhasan. Proses memasak misalnya, tak seperti nasi goreng lain yang memasak dalam jumlah kecil. Sekali masak, penjual bisa menuangkan nasi sebanyak setengah bakul di wajan super besar yang telah diisi oleh bumbu khusus. Disebut bumbu khusus karena ia tak lagi meracik di tempat penjualan, tetapi sudah dalam bentuk campuran yang siap untuk melezatkan nasi goreng.

Daging ayam atau "B2" ditambahkan pada saat nasi goreng telah ditaruh dalam piring. Selain itu, ditambahkan pula beberapa iris tomat, kol, daun seledri, telur dadar bulat dan acar sebagai pelengkap. Sepiring nasi goreng berharga Rp 5.000,00 untuk ayam dan Rp 6.000,00 untuk "B2". Karena lezat, banyak pengunjung memesan nasi dalam porsi yang lebih besar, mulai dari 1,5 hingga 2 porsi langsung untuk satu orang.

Rasa nasi goreng ini bisa dikatakan pas, tak terlalu manis juga tidak terlalu asin. Aroma bawang putihnya tak begitu kuat namun tetap terasa. Nah, bagaimana, tertarik mencicipinya? Selain nasi goreng, tersedia juga bakmi dan bihun serta "B2" kecap yang tak kalah nikmat.

Setidaknya, Kenanga Coffee Shop yang ada di Hotel Melawai, Jakarta, tertarik untuk ikut memopulerkan jenis menu tersebut kepada pengunjungnya. Promosi aneka menu asal Provinsi Sumatra Barat itu sedang berlangsung dan akan berakhir pada akhir Juni mendatang. Berbagai jenis masakan Padang, mulai rendang, ayam bakar, hingga ayam pop disediakan di coffee shop yang identik dengan nuansa merah tersebut.

Untuk mendapatkan cita rasa yang benar-benar sama dengan masakan Padang di daerah aslinya, Kenanga Coffee Shop menggunakan bumbu-bumbu tradisional seperti jahe, kunyit, lengkuas, dan serai yang menjadi bumbu utama masakan Padang di daerah asal.

"Kami sengaja mengadakan promosi masakan Padang karena banyak tamu yang memesan masakan tersebut. Untuk pengobat rindu pada masakan Ranah Minang itu, kami membuat masakan yang identik dengan rasa di daerah aslinya," kata Executive Chef in Charge F & B Manager Hotel Melawai Jakarta Haddy Ratony.

Seperti di daerah asalnya, di Kenanga Coffee Shop, rendang juga menjadi menu unggulan yang banyak diminati oleh para tamu yang berkunjung. Rendang yang merupakan masakan bersantan dengan daging sebagai bahan utamanya, menjadi unggulan karena rasanya yang benar-benar menggigit lidah.

"Untuk mendapatkan rendang dengan rasa yang sempurna, daging yang kami buat sebagai bahan dasarnya, haruslah daging sapi yang benar-benar segar," terang Haddy.

Menu lainnya yang tidak kalah menggoda untuk dicoba di Kenanga Coffee Shop adalah menu bernama ayam pop. Tidak mudah memang menemukan menu ini di rumah makan Padang karena proses pembuatannya yang lebih rumit.

"Ayam yang digunakan pada ayam pop adalah ayam kampung. Selain ayam kampung, rasanya akan sangat berbeda," ujar chef yang telah keliling Indonesia untuk mempraktikkan keahliannya memasak itu.

Untuk mendapatkan ayam pop yang empuk, Haddy mengaku menggunakan ayam kampung yang masih berusia mulai tiga hingga empat bulan. Lebih dari itu, daging ayam akan terasa alot.

"Agar daging ayam benar-benar matang dengan sempurna, kami merebusnya langsung dengan bumbu. Setelah itu dicelupkan sekejap saja dalam minyak yang panas, agar bumbu tertinggal di dalam daging," jelasnya.

Bagi penggemar aneka ikan, jangan berkecil hati dulu, karena Kenanga Coffee Shop juga menyediakan aneka masakan Padang berbahan dasar daging ikan.

SELAMA ini bebek peking selalu menjadi menu andalan restoran China. Padahal, dengan pengolahan yang maksimal, daging sapi pun bisa dijadikan pengganti daging bebek.

Bebek peking atau yang dikenal dengan peking duck adalah sajian favorit dari daratan China. Menikmati sajian bebek panggang dengan saus khusus itu bisa jadi merupakan keinginan banyak orang. Di Pangeran Cafe, yang terletak di Hotel Wiltop, Jakarta, bebek peking hadir dengan bentuk dan bahan baru yang unik karena terbuat dari daging sapi.

Berbeda dengan bebek peking biasa yang memiliki daging lebih kecil dan selalu disajikan bersama kulit bebek yang sedikit alot, daging sapi peking memiliki irisan daging yang besar dan empuk.

"Ini adalah inovasi terbaru kami. Selama ini menu bebek Peking terbuat dari bebek. Di kafe ini, kami membuatnya dari daging sapi. Rasanya benar-benar menggoda," kata Chef De Pastry Hotel Wiltop Jakarta Isnan.

Untuk mendapatkan daging sapi peking yang tidak kalah dengan bebek peking, chef yang telah berpengalaman puluhan tahun di dunia kuliner ini menggunakan arak putih, jahe, dan kapulaga dalam proses pembuatan menu tersebut.

"Sebelum daging sapi diolah menjadi menu daging peking, daging dipanggang dulu. Setelah itu baru direndam dengan bumbu," sebutnya.

Keunikan lain dari daging sapi peking, menurut chef yang telah delapan tahun bekerja di Pangeran Cafe ini, adalah sausnya yang memiliki rasa tidak berbeda dengan bebek peking. "Agar daging empuk, kami menggunakan daging tenderloin dari sapi yang tidak terlalu tua," ujarnya.

Selain daging sapi peking, Pangeran Cafe juga hadir dengan menu lain yang tidak kalah menggugah selera. Menu tersebut seperti terung schehuan dan mi goreng singapore.

"Terung schehuan yang kami sajikan terbuat dari terung sayur biasa. Namun, dengan inovasi dan bumbu yang lengkap, kami membuatnya berbeda," kata Isnan lagi.

Berbeda dengan menu bercita rasa tradisional Indonesia, menu-menu Oriental, menurut Isnan, memiliki rasa yang cenderung asam, pedas, dan manis.

"Menu Oriental kental dengan kolaborasi tiga rasa tersebut. Itulah yang membuat menu Oriental banyak digemari karena cocok dengan lidah siapa saja," ucapnya.

Indonesian ancestors were born with talent for crafting things out of trees, metal, mud and rock. This led to the beauty and artful Indonesian handicrafts. Our love towards the beauty of rhythm and movements gave births to many performing arts, as well as traditional music and dances. Indonesian culture, like Indonesia itself, is a fascinating blend of indigenous, Malay, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic elements. Indonesia is a country of great diversity and its national motto is Bhineka Tunggal Ika or "Unity in Diversity." This diversity is also found in all aspects of culture and life: ethnic group, language, religion, housing, cuisine, dance and music, artistic expression, etc as each has many local variants.

There are about 500 ethnic groups in Indonesia spread from Sabang, the northernmost tip of Sumatra, to Merauke in Papua. The Javanese community is the largest number of Indonesia’s total population, followed by the Sundanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, Buginese, Batak and the Balinese. Languages and dialects spoken and written over the whole of the Indonesian archipelago, 150 to 250 in number are usually classified according to the above mentioned ethnic groups. In between these languages there exist many other different dialects.

However, Indonesia is also noted for several distinct and national cultural expressions. These include the Wayang shadow puppet theatre, the gamelan orchestra, Balinese and Javanese dances, batik cloth making traditions, and rice based and spicy cuisine.

Ramayana Ballet
Ramayana ballet is an art performance that is so beautiful, admiring and it is difficult to compare. This performance is able to unite various Javanese arts such as dance, drama and music on one stage and one momentum to present the Ramayana story, a legendary epos written by Walmiki in Sanskrit language.

Ramayana story presented in this performance is similar to that engraved on Prambanan temple. As people tell, Ramayana story that is engraved on the most beautiful Hindu temple is similar to the story in oral tradition in India. The long and straining story is summarized in four scenes, namely the kidnapping of Shinta, Anoman's mission to Alengka, the death of Kumbakarna or Rahwana, and the meeting of Rama-Shinta.

The entire story is presented in a series of dance movements done by beautiful dancers accompanied by gamelan music. You are invited to really plunge into the story and observe each movement of the dancers to know the coarse of the story. There is no dialog among the dancers. The only storyteller is the sinden or the female singer who describes the coarse of the story through Javanes songs with her typical voice.

The story begins when Prabu Janaka held a contest to determine the would-be husband for Shinta, his daughter that finally was won by Rama Wijaya. The scene is continued with the adventure of Rama, Shinta and Rama's younger brother named Laksamana in Dandaka forest. There, they met Rawana that was eager to posses Shinta since she was considered the reincarnation of goddess Widowati, a woman that he had been seeking for long.

In order to attract Shinta's attention, Rahwana changed one of his followers named Marica into a deer. The effort was successful when Shinta was attracted and asked Rama to chase the deer. When Rama did not show up after a while, Laksmana went to find Rama and left Shinta herself by protecting her with a magic circle around her in order that nobody would be able to kidnap her, including Rahwana. The protection failed to keep Shinta in the place since Rahwana succeeded in kidnapping her by changing himself into Durna character.

At the end of the story, Hanoman, the white, powerful monkey succeeded in taking Shinta from Rahwana. When she returned, however, Rama did not trust her anymore. He considered Shinta disgraced. In order to prove her virginity and holiness, Shinta was asked to burn herself. Shinta proved her holiness when she was not burned at all even she became more beautiful. Finally, Rama accepted her as his wife.

You will not be disappointed to see this excellent performance. They do not only prepare the dance and music, but also the lighting that is set in such a way to be able to describe certain events in that story. The make up of the dancers does not only make them beautiful but it is capable of describing the characters they perform so that spectators easily know the characters even though there is no dialog.

You will see not only the dance but also interesting acts such as fireball game and acrobat. The fireball game is presented when Hanoman that initially would be fired alive turned to be successful in burning Alengkadiraja Kingdom owned by Rahwana. The acrobat is seen when Hanoman fights against Rahwana's followers. The fireball when Shinta would be burned is also interesting to see.

There are two places in Yogyarta where Ramayana ballet is performed. First, in Purawisata Yogyarta that is located on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, to the east of Yogyakarta Kingdom. In the place that was recorded in Indonesian Record Museum in 2002 for performing Ramayana ballet for 25 years, you will enjoy dinner while seeing the ballet. The other place to see the ballet is the open stage and Trimurti closed-stage in the complex of Prambanan temple.

Batik Course
Visiting Yogyakarta, you may not just buy and enjoy the marvelous batik artwork, but you have the opportunity to learn the technique of its production. The valuable opportunity packed in an interesting tour package with quite short duration and affordable cost will surely be fun.

Batik patterns you can learn involve hand-made batik, printed batik and painted batik. Each place usually has its special batik pattern to teach. For one day course, it is usually divided into two sessions; you will learn all processes of batik making that generally consist of pattern making, cloth coloring, wax dying and drying.

The process of pattern making starts when all materials, especially the cloth are ready. The making of this pattern is done with wax as the main material that is used to block color. If you want to make hand-made batik, the pattern making is done by using the wax pen called canting while printed batik is made by utilizing a prepared copper stamp with certain design.

You are free to choose the pattern you are going to make. Unique patterns you can make are, for example, ceplok, cecek sawut, and semen. You can find all of the patterns in historical buildings in Indonesia. Ceplok pattern can be found in Borobudur Temple; cecek sawut in a copper drum in Copper Time while semen pattern can be found in the tomb of Kalinyamat Queen.

The process is continued by coloring the cloth. The cloth with pattern on it is dipped into a bucket filled with coloring agent. This process seems simple, but actually it is difficult, moreover if batik must be colored more than two. Many batik artisans still use natural colors made from certain natural materials, but there are many who use synthetic coloring agents.

After coloring thoroughly, the process is continued by dying the wax, or removing the wax attaching to the cloth. Initially, prepare the boiling water mixed with soda ash and finally the cloth is dipped to remove the entire wax. If there is still wax attached, it must be cleaned after the dying process.

The final step is washing. When using natural coloring agent, the washing cannot be done by using detergent that will damage the color. After being washed, the cloth is dried under indirect sun to avoid discoloring. After this drying process, you can see the difference of batik colored with natural coloring agent; the color is usually less bright.

Batik courses in Yogyakarta provide professional instructors to make you competent even though with short course only. Some places also have instructors speaking foreign languages, especially English, to ease you understand the lesson.

One of the places providing batik course is Sanggar Kalpika in Kampung Taman, at the west of Tamansari. There, you can learn painted batik. If you prefer to learn hand-made and printed batik, Balai Batik is the right place. The institution that is located on Jalan Kusumanegara provides special staff and room for you to learn batik. The cost ranges from IDR 250,000 to IDR 1,500,000 based on the course types.

In addition to learning batik, you can also enjoy the activity and the works of batik artisans in Kampung Taman that 30 years ago has been developing painted batik. You can also see various batik styles exhibited in Balai Batik.

The trek starts from Kraton Ratu-Boko's headquarter at 03:00 pm and return home again at 09:00 am. Having traced the hills of Ratu-Boko up to Gunung Tugel (or Gunung Pegat), the participants can, if the weather is fine, enjoy sunrise while having a rest. The trekking trip is then continued to the nearest temple like Candi Ijo. You may spend the night on your tents, cottages, or if you like, you can stay in the locals' house appointed by us. On the way back to Ratu-Boko, breakfast will be served in the small bamboo hut, on top of the hill, viewing towering active volcanos of Sumbing, Sindoro, Merapi and Lawu. Those taking part in the trekking can also have breakfast while enjoying the ambience of the countryside.

English-speaking guide, light traditional breakfast and mineral water included. Minimum participant to run the tour is 2 pax. The arrival of Gunadharma was welcomed suspiciously. Gunadharma's polite and wise attitude, however, opened the hearts of the local people and they finally accepted him well.
There was revelation of the enlightenment that implied a place named "Bukit Menoreh" (the Menoreh Hill) would become symbol of the golden time along the history. This was revealed through point of light on Menoreh hill. At the center of the light, shadowed by the holy light there appeared Buddha image who was sitting and praying.
Old Mataram Kingdom

Gunadharma and his followers came to the Kingdom to see the king, but unintentionally they passed through a garden where Dewi Pramudya Wardhani who originated from Syailendra dynasty was there. Seeing Dewi Pramudya Wardani, Gunadharma change his intention. They fell in love.
The appearance of King Syailendra disturbed the romantic situation. The king, however, was wise; Gunadharma knelt down and told about the dream he had. With the king's order, Gunadharma was trusted to lead the construction of Borobudur temple on stair holy place.
The Construction of Borobudur Temple

The activity of temple construction was supported by all areas under King Syaillendra. They worked together to construct the temple with glowing enthusiasm. The making of the temple was lead by Gunadharma.
In the mid of the construction activity, there was temptation or disturbance by ghost that resulted in calamity. King Syaillendra and Gunadharma prayed to expel the devil.
Gunadharma, noblemen, and all people made an offering to plead for safety and success in building the temple.
Gunadharma Bhakti (The Dedication of Gunadharma)

As their dedication, Gunadharma with all people and the noblemen worked hard to finish the temple. Upon the finishing of the temple, Gunadharma incorporated into Borobudur temple and stayed at Menoreh forever to keep the temple physically and spiritually. Gunadharma also kept on giving inspiration about life and society's life.

Gamelan is surely not a foreign music. It has been popular in most continents and has created new music integration, for example jazz-gamelan, has born institution as learning space and gamelan music expression and it has produced famous gamelan musicians. Gamelan music instrument can now be enjoyed in various parts of the world, but Yogyakarta is the right place to enjoy it since you can enjoy the original version of gamelan.

Gamelan that grows in Yogyakarta is Javanese gamelan, one form of gamelan that is different from Balinese gamelan or Sundanese gamelan. Javanese gamelan has softer and slower tones; it is different from Balinese gamelan that is very dynamic and Sundanese gamelan that is melodious with domination of the voice of seruling or traditional bamboo flute. The difference is just natural since Java has its own view of life that is expressed in its gamelan music melody.

The Javanese view of life that is expressed in its gamelan music is the harmony of physical and spiritual lives, harmony in talking as well as behaving in order not to create explosive expression and to realize people tolerance. The real form of harmony in Javanese gamelan music is the moderate play of rebab string, voice harmony of kenong, saron kendang and gambang and the voice of gong ate each closing of the melody.

There is no definite history of gamelan existence. The development of gamelan music is predicted to begin from the existence of kentongan, rebab, tap on the mouth, rubs on string and thin bamboo until the introduction of metal music instruments. Further development after named by gamelan, this music was used to accompany leather puppet show and dances. Later it became independent music and it was completed with voices of female singers called sinden.

A set of gamelan consists of several music instruments; some of them are drum called kendhang, rebab, and celempung, gambang, gong and bamboo flute or seruling. The main components composing the gamelan music instruments are bamboo, metal, and wood. Each of the instrument has its own function in a gamelan music show, for example the gong functioning to close the long music melodies and to give balance after the music was previously decorated by Javanese music melodies.

Javanese gamelan is music with pentatonic melodies. A complete gamelan play consists of two cycles, namely slendro and pelog. Slendro has 5 melodies per octave, namely 1 2 3 5 6 [C- D E+ G A] with small interval difference. Pelog has 7 melodies per octave namely 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 [C+ D E- F# A B] with big interval difference. Gamelan music composition was created with some rules, namely consists of some cycles and pathet, confined by one gong and the melodies were created in a unit consisting of 4 melodies.

You can see gamelan as an independent music performance or a companion of a dance or performance arts such as leather puppet show and ketoprak. As an independent performance, gamelan music is usually combined with the voice of the Javanese singers (male singers are called wiraswara and female singers are called waranggana or sinden). Gamelan music performance can be classic or contemporary. One form of contemporary gamelan is jazz-gamelan as a combination of music with pentatonic and diatonic melodies.

One of the places in Yogyakarta where you can see gamelan performance is Yogyakarta Kingdom. On Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. gamelan is performed as an independent music performance. On Saturdays at the same hours, gamelan is performed as companion of leather puppet show, while on Sundays at the same hours, gamelan accompanies Javanese traditional dance. Please come to Bangsal Sri Manganti to see the performance. Meanwhile, in order to see older gamelan music instrument, you can go to other hall of the kingdom that is located a little further at the back.

Sekaten Ceremony
The procession of Sekaten ceremony begins with a parade of royal servants bringing the two sets of royal gamelan named Kyai Gunturmadu and Kyai Nogowilogo to the Grand Mosque (Masjid Agung). The Gamelan are played stimultaneously for seven days. It's interesting to know that Javanese still believe that by chewing betel (sirih leaves) while listening to the two sets of gamelan, they will get a good life and granted a youthfulness. The special food remain in Sekaten tradition are Nasi Gurih and Endhog Abang. During the Sekaten a night fair is held at northern square (alun-alun utara) for almost a month. The Garebeg ceremony is also held by Puro Pakualaman, at the palace at Jl. Sultan Agung, Yogyakarta.

Stepping on the First Palace of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Kingdom
Pesanggrahan Ambarketawang was the first palace of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat kingdom. Even though it has been very old, some remains of the building still keep enchantment, including the Saparan ceremony and the reading of traditional Javanese song called macapat.

GOVT FOCUSES ON IMPROVING
THREE SECTORS: PRESIDENT
Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono said the government is
focusing on alleviating poverty, developing
the national economy and
encouraging the nation's self reliance.
"What we are doing and will do in the
near future are to improve the people's
welfare, firstly, by alleviating poverty and
reducing unemployment; and secondly,
by restoring the national economy,
particularly that related to efforts to
attract investments and boost the real
sector," the president said in his stateof-
the-nation address marking the start
of the year at the presidential palace
here.
Of equal importance was to build the
nation's self reliance in the fields of
economy, foreign policies and state
defense which must be strengthened in
the context of the globalized international
relations, he said.
"The self-reliance means that we
must not be dependent on other nations
for our future," he added.
He said among the efforts the
government would continue to make in
2007 would be extending direct cash
allowance (BLT) to some 500,000 poor
families in 348 sub districts in five
districts in seven provinces, distributing
subsidized rice for the poor (Raskin),
providing school assistance (BOS) and
free health services at public health
service posts (Puskesmas) and
hospitals, building low-cost houses for
the people in the low income bracket,
and giving micro-credits and rotating
fund to cooperatives and small-scale
businesses.
He added the government would also
increase the welfare of civil servants and
members of the Indonesian Military and
Police.
On the economic development, he
said the government would try hard to
increase the economic growth to above
6 percent per year.
He said the economic growth in 2005
and 2006 came close to the pre-crisis
level of 5.6 percent per year.
The president noted that nine serious
obstacles had led to low investment
inflows, including high lending rates,
uncompetitive taxation system, lengthy
procedure of licensing investment
proposals, lack of legal certainty and
poor security.
The other obstacles were related to
political stability, infrastructure, and
contradictory bylaws, he added.

RI TO TARGET US$9 BILLION
INCOME FROM NON-OIL/NON-GAS
EXPORTS IN 2010
Jakarta - Indonesia will target a 100
percent increase in its export of nonoil/
non-gas commodities to US$9 billion
in 2010 following the signing of details
of the Japan-Indonesia Economic
Partnership Agreement (JIEPA) in
March or April this year, an industrial
official said.
"In 2010, non-oil/non-gas exports
should record a two-fold increase from
the figure in 2005 which only stood at
US$4.5 billion," Achdiat Atmawinata, a
senior adviser on industrial infrastructure
enhancement to the Industry Minister,
told ANTARA here.

He said such an increase in nonoil/
non-gas exports would be of great
significance to Indonesia, especially in
improving the performance of domestic
industries in penetrating the non-tariff
barrier-packed Japanese market.
So far, Achdiat added, Indonesian
exports to Japan were dominated by oil
and gas products such as LNG. Of the
total of US$20.7 billion Indonesia was
earning from exports, only US$4.5
billion came from non-oil/non-gas
exports.
In the meantime, Indonesia's nonoil/
non-gas exports to Japan were
dominated by manufactured products of
high quality. But some the lowtechnology
exports included primary
agricultural, fishery and forestry
products.
Achdiat said his side hoped JIEPA
would not only open markets for the two
countries but also enhance Japan's role
in helping industries in Indonesia to
improve their capability in getting more
access not only to Japan's market but
also to the global market.
The effort to enhance the capability,
he added, was more directed at
improving domestic industrial progress
in fulfilling efficiency, quality and ontime
delivery standards.
"JIEPA is actually an asymmetric
partnership, because there is such a
difference between Japan's high
technological know-how and
Indonesia's. Hence, we only hope that
Japan will also help improve industrial
capability in Indonesia," he said.

PRESIDENT: INDONESIAN
ECONOMY SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN
HOSTAGE BY HUGE DEBTS
Jakarta - President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono said in a condition of selfsufficiency,
the Indonesian economy
should not be taken hostage by huge
debts nor should the country be
dictated by third parties in its economic
development policies and programs.
"With the awareness and full of
calculations, we thus accelerate the
settlement of our debts amounting to
US$ 7 billion to the IMF (International
Monetary Fund) in 2006, four years
ahead of the scheduled time," the head
of state said when delivering an earlyyear
speech at the State Palace.
The president pointed out that despite
the settlement of the debts to the IMF,
the country's foreign exchange reserves
had remained strong, namely,
amounting to about US$42 billion, the
highest in the history of the Indonesian
economy.
With the settlement of the debts to the
IMF, Indonesia was now an equal
partner to the international financial
institution like other countries which are
not assisted by the fund, he said.
"We are no longer bound in the Post-
Program Monitoring in which the IMF
still had a supervisory role in the
programs and implementation of our
economic development in the past," the
president said.
In addition, the head of state said the
government had also decided to
dissolve the Consultative Group on
Indonesia (CGI) program.
"I'm of the opinion that it is high time
for us to design and decide our own
economic programs by ourselves and
freely and independently choose
financial sources for our development
without consultations with countries or
international institutions grouped in the
CGI forum," he said.
If there is a talk between Indonesia
and one or two of them, it will be done
bilaterally by consistently maintaining

transparency and independence in
negotiations with them, the president
said.
Thus, the chief executive said
Indonesia would be really independent
in setting agendas and priorities in the
budget allocation as well as deciding
financial sources and implementing what
had been planned.
Yudhoyono further said Indonesia
continued efforts to reduce the amount
of debts and the ratio between debts
and the national income.
"The economy will not be sound if the
ratio between debts and the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) is still high.
Thank God, we managed to reduce the
ratio between debts and GDP from 56.9
percent in 2004 to 48.1 percent in 2005
and to 42.1 percent in 2006," he noted.
The figures are better than those in
Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines,
he said, adding that in the future
Indonesia would try to reduce the ratio
again to 35 percent or even lower.
If the target is reached, Indonesia can
be free from the status of a country with
big debts, he added.
In addition to the declining ratio of
debts, Indonesia would also have more
varieties of financial sources, he said.
Indonesia's dependence on foreign
debts has been reducing. The financial
sources would be extended to avoid
budget risks from the fluctuating
exchange rates of currencies, interest
rates and roll-over risk.
The healthier and stronger state
budget which is resistant to fluctuation
would be one of important elements in
our economy," the head of state said.
"With this spirit, we will make up our
budget in order to reduce the
components of debt repayment and
subsidies which are not productive and
unnecessary so that our state budget
would be stronger and we could allocate
bigger budget to different development
sectors particularly in the effort to
improve human quality and increase
welfare for the Indonesian people," he
said.
He said independence in the
economic sector did not mean that
Indonesia would isolate itself from
cooperation and partnership with other
countries and international institutions.
In the current global economic era,
we have to be able to take biggest
advantage and benefits for the national
economy, he said.
Thus, Indonesia should maintain the
regional economic cooperation in the
frameworks of ASEAN (Association of
Southeast Asian Nations) and APEC
(Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) as
well as cooperation with Europe and
Middle Eastern countries, he said.

INDONESIA'S EXPORTS REACHED
OVER US$100 BILLION IN 2006
Jakarta - The Central Bureau of
Statistics (BPS) said Indonesia's
exports had reached US$9.5 billion in
December 2006 bringing the figure on
the January-December period in 2006 to
US$100.69 billion or an increase by
17.55 percent compared to a
corresponding period in 2005.
"Exports reached the psychological
level of US$9 billion for the first time in
the country's history," BPS Chief
Rusman Heriawan said.
He said the country's imports in
December 2006 reached US$4.94 billion
bringing the figure for the January-
December period in 2006 to US$61.08
billion, or an increase of 5.85 percent
compared to a corresponding period a
year earlier.

Indonesia enjoyed an international
trade surplus of US$39.61 billion.
December's exports rose by 6.43
percent compared to November's. If
compared to December 2005, it
increased by 16.91 percent.
Rusman further said December's
non-oil/non-gas exports had reached
US$7.62 billion or an increase by 6.26
percent compared to Novermber's. If
compared to December 2005, it rose by
21.02 percent.
Overall, Indonesia's non-oil/non-gas
exports in the January-December period
in 2006 reached US$79.50 billion or an
increase by 19.68 percent compared to
the corresponding period a year earlier.
Commodities like rubber, rubber
goods, metals, fats, vegetable and
animal oils, CPO, copper, steel and
paper contributed to the increase in the
overall export figure.
Oil and gas exports also increased in
December 2006.
It was caused by an increase in
crude oil exports by 13.85 percent to
US$794.3 million and in gas exports by
11.91 percent to US$869.4 million. But
export of processed oil dropped by
23.49 percent to US$210.7 million.
"The Indonesian crude oil price in the
global market rose to 60.15 dollars per
barrel in December 2006 from 55.90
dollars in November 2006," Rusman

NATIONAL EDUCATION MINISTER
LAUNCHES LANGUAGE VILLAGE
NEAR BOROBUDUR TEMPLE
Magelang, C Java - Minister of
National Education Bambang Sudibyo
has launched a Language Village in
Ngargogondo, a small village in
Magelang district, Central Java
province, around three kilometers
southeast of Borobudur Temple.
"I hope Ngargogondo village is good
and would serve as a model for other
villages. We will support it. But if (the
village) forgets the Indonesian and
Javanese languages, we will stop the
assistance," the minister flanked by
Singgih Sanyoto, head of the Magelang
district administration, said.
He also said the development of the
village as a Language Village was
expected to support the tourism area of
Borobudur Temple.
According to him, tourists came to
Borobudur Temple because they wanted
to see the rich Javanese culture.
If the local people forgot their culture,
he said, tourists would have no interest
in coming there. "Borobudur Temple is
still a symbol of the Javanese culture if
the people reserve it," Bambang added.
He said he welcomed the Language
Village because it is an indication of the
local people's awareness and revival of
the importance of communications in the
current modern era.
The minister held a dialog with a
number of people who wished to learn

RECONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOL
BUILDINGS IN ACEH TO BE
COMPLETED BY 2008
Banda Aceh - The rehabilitation and
reconstruction of school buildings
damaged by the earthquake and
tsunami on December 26 in 2004 in
some districts/municipalities in
Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam is expected
to be completed by 2008, a local
education official said.

"We have set the target for
completing the rehabilitation and
reconstruction of damaged school
buildings and their re-opening at some
time in 2008," head of the local
education office Anas M Adam said.
To date, he added, two years after the
tsunami, some 400 school buildings had
been rehabilitated and reconstructed
with assistance from several local and
foreign donors and institutions, besides
the Aceh and Nias Rehabilitation and
Reconstruction Agency (BRR).

INDONESIA, FRANCE EXTEND
COOPERATION IN IMPROVING
ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES
Jakarta - Indonesia and France have
agreed to extend their cooperation in the
improvement of access to health
services, which has been going on since
November 2001, a senior official said.
The cooperation in the field of health
access services had involved the
Indonesian Ministry of Health and the
French non-governmental organization
Medecins Du Monde, Director General
for Public Health Development Sri Astuti
Suparmanto said.
She said the extension of the
cooperation for another three years
covered efforts to provide basic health
access services, the development of
health reproduction status and
improvement in the health services for
mothers and children.
The director general said that the
Health Ministry and the Medecins Du
Monde had previously carried out three
main projects, among others,
emergency project which directly
provided emergency medical
assistance, distribution of medicines,
clear water supplies and vaccination.
Other projects included rehabilitation
projects with main activities in improving
health and social structure and the
restoration of the physical and
psychological conditions of natural
disasters' victims.
"The rehabilitation project is part of
the emergency project with a period of
six months to three years," the director

INDONESIA, NORWAY PREPARE
MEDIA DIALOG
Yogyakarta - Indonesian and
Norwegian journalists and media
professionals met for a two-day meeting
in Yogyakarta to prepare for the second
Global Inter-Media Dialog in Oslo later
this year.
The meeting's organizers hoped to
capitalize on a successful inaugural
gathering in Bali last year.
Foreign Ministry officials from the
two countries were also present to
facilitate the meeting and to choose a
theme for the second gathering and
formulate a list of speakers and invitees.
The first meeting in Bali saw the
presence of 80 journalists and media
professionals from around the world. It
took place against the backdrop of the
Danish cartoon controversy, which
triggered massive protests in the Muslim
world in early 2006.
The Bali meeting agreed on the
need for the media to be more culturally
sensitive in the face of an increasingly
connected and interdependent world. It
fell short, however, of endorsing a global
code of ethics for the media.

from Norway and Indonesia were limited

Tine Morck Smith opened the meeting.
They were accompanied by the
Indonesian Ambassador to Norway,
Retno L.P. Marsudi, and the director for
public diplomacy at the Foreign Ministry,
Umar Hadi.
Also at the meeting were Bambang
Harymurti of Indonesia's Tempo group
and Siri Lill Mannes, a Norwegian TV
news anchor. Representatives from New
Zealand, Belgium and Russia were also

SAUDI GOVT ALLOCATES $2
MILLION FOR MOSQUE
REHABILITATION IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Aceh - The Saudi
government has set aside US$2 million
in fund for rehabilitation of Baiturrahman
Grand Mosque in tsunami-devastated
Banda Aceh city, an official said.
The fund was the Saudi people's
donations channeled through the Islamic
Development Bank (IDB), Saudi Charity
Campaign (SCC) director Muhammad
Ibrahim Al-Khalaf said after signing a
memorandum of understanding on
rehabilitation of the mosque here.
The fund would be channeled in two

The Saudi government would directly
supervise the use of fund for the project
which was due to start this year, he said.
"Not only the mosque rehabilitation
but also other post-tsunami
humanitarian projects funded by the
Saudi government are subject to
supervision to ensure that the people of
Aceh will enjoy the projects in the long
run," he said.
He said the Saudi government would
always help Aceh in the aftermath of an
8.9 magnitude undersea earthquake
and subsequent tsunami that killed more
than 190,000 people on December 26,
2004.
The Saudi government was
considering channeling humanitarian aid
worth US$50 million for different sectors
of development in Aceh, he said.

CHINA WINS HEARTS IN SE ASIA

Relations between China and
several Southeast Asian nations have
been fast improving. ASEAN leaders
now regularly speak highly of China, and
of the nation's recent successes. This
positive atmosphere was unheard of 10
years ago.
During his visit to Laos in 2000,
Chinese president Jiang Zemin received
a very warm welcome, in which
"banners were hung across the capital
lauding Jiang, and endless banquets
were held in his honor". This scene was
replicated in Cambodia, where over
200,000 cheering schoolchildren
welcomed Jiang's motorcade.

In the early '90s, Cambodia opposed
China's involvement with the Khmer
Rouge. While Myanmar, suffering from
an embargo implemented by Western
nations, showed its gratitude to China
for its support by bettering economic
and political ties between the nations.
Thailand is no exception from this
pattern. A long-time British and U.S. ally,
the nation now considers its diplomatic
relationship with China -- along with
India -- essential to furthering its own
position in Asia.
Vietnam has been at war with China
since 1979, but from 1991, when
diplomatic relations between the nations
were restored, Vietnam's relations with
China have continued to improve.
In February 2002 the two nations
proposed the "Four good themes": good
neighbors, good friends, good
camaraderie and good partners. As a
result, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar,
Thailand and Vietnam, which all hug the
Mekong River, have benefited
tremendously from trade with China.
Under the framework of the Greater
Mekong Sub-region (GMS), China has
implemented a development program in
the Mekong Basin. It has been
noticeable that China has paid great
attention to this region through aidgiving.
It is within the Mekong area that
China's soft power is most evident.
Similar trends have been evidenced
in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines
and Indonesia. Malaysia, under Dr.
Mahathir, has developed a close
relationship with China, and at both
economic and diplomatic levels the two
countries are on good terms.
Singapore remains a "natural friend"
of China as the majority of the citystate's
population are of Chinese
descent. Although their relationship was
strained during the '70s, as of 1990 it
has been reinvigorated by increased
trade and two-way visits from the
nations' leaders. Meanwhile, relations
between China and the Philippines have
been caught in a dangerous dispute
over Mischief Reef.
Yet, in the past five years, relations
between the two countries have been
bettered due to high-level exchanges.
The Philippines have also received a
loan of US$500 million to build railroads.
Relations between Indonesia and
China suffered after a diplomatic breakup
lasting 32 years. Yet, over the past
eight years, Indonesia and China have
worked to better this situation. Visits by
leaders of the two countries have been
more frequent, while exports and
imports have grown. When the Asian
financial crisis hit Indonesia, China also
increased its assistance to the region.
In addition to US$400 million in
stand-by loans as part of an IMF rescue
package, China also increased its export
credit facilities by $200 million. During
the 2004 tsunami disaster, China was
among the first of nations to provide not
only financial assistance to Indonesia,
but also medical assistance.
Throughout Joseph Nye's term in
office, China increased its "soft power".
This differs from "hard power" in that
soft power does not rely on military
strength to subjugate a country, but
rather on values and culture. If power is
defined as a means to acquire the
intended result, then soft power is still
within this boundary of definition, except
that it rejects the use of force or
violence.
"A country may obtain the outcome it
wants in world politics because other
countries -- admiring its values,
emulating its example, aspiring to its
level of prosperity and openness -- want
to follow it," Nye says.

which citizens of ASEAN nations belong.
One observer said, "Chinese culture,
cuisine, calligraphy, cinema, curios, art,
acupuncture, herbal, medicine and
fashion fads have penetrated into
regional culture." He also says Chinese
films, pop-music and film stars, such a
Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, are now
extremely popular among Southeast
Asia's youth.
Mainland Chinese brands such as
Hai'er, TCL and Huawei have also
become increasingly popular in many
Southeast Asian societies. According to
a poll conducted in Thailand in 2003, 76
percent of respondents considered
China to be Thailand's closest friend.
